I recently took out my braids (I braided my hair after a failed attempt at going natural). I’m pretty sure it was the change from relaxed to natural and back to relaxed hair, but my hair was breaking bad (pun intended). Every time I pulled at the hair, it just came off and it broke my heart to little tiny pieces. Plus it was all limp and frizzled. A sure recipe for disaster.
I had just finished relaxing my hair and my hair dresser Lara said I would need to get a steam treatment @ an extra N2,500 ($16) to stop the breaking. Me ke? I wasn’t willing to spend another penny. Besides, I was pretty sure all she was gonna put in my hair was sitting pretty on my kitchen shelf. And off to my kitchen I went. Literally.
I had a little mayonnaise left; so I mixed it up with honey and olive oil. I didn’t really measure; I just eyeballed it and made sure the consistency wasn’t too thick or too light. By the way, I mixed all the ingredients in the mayonnaise jar because it was almost finished anyway, so you might want to mix yours in a separate cup. Then I decided to share this tutorial, in case there was someone in need of a healthy alternative treatment like me.
I put my ‘magic mix’ in my hair, making sure to cover all the strands, while working it into my scalp. Then I sort of rolled my hair into a bun, covered it with a shower cap and let it sit for like 20minutes. You can warm it up with a hand dryer if you have one.
I went back to the salon to wash out the ‘treatment’ using a herbal shampoo and blow – dried the hair. Lara then applied Shea Butter and Coconut Oil, straightened out my hair and curled the ends. Even she was amazed and asked what I used as treatment because as she combed through, not a strand fell out. I kid you not. I would strongly advise that you use a herbal shampoo though because it does not strip your hair of its oils and it keeps your tresses really soft. Plus the Shea Butter and Coconut Oil really work like magic.
I think my hair really bounced back to life. I use a bit of Shea Butter and Coconut Oil to moisturize daily and it really does feel amazing. You should give this homemade hair treatment a try. I’ve also used avocado before and it was great.
What homemade hair treatments have you tried? I’d really like to know.
